Overview

The Fast Sync option will speed up FTP file synchronization remarkably after the first sync. That's because FTP Synchronizer will NOT scan the remote folders. Instead, it uses the local directory buffer.

Important Consideration

You should not change files in the FTP server manually when using Fast Sync mode, because FTP Synchronizer doesn't know about these changes and won't detect them.

When to Use Fast Sync

  • You're the only one who modifies files on the server
  • All file changes are made through FTP Synchronizer
  • You need faster synchronization speeds
  • You've already completed a full sync and know the state matches

How It Works

When Fast Sync is enabled:

  1. FTP Synchronizer stores a local cache of the remote directory structure
  2. On subsequent syncs, it uses this cached information instead of scanning the server
  3. This dramatically reduces the time needed for directory listing operations
  4. Only file transfers are performed, no directory scanning

Limitations

  • Manual changes won't be detected: Files added, modified, or deleted directly on the FTP server won't be recognized
  • Initial sync is normal: The first synchronization will still need to scan the remote server
  • Requires consistent access: Works best when you have exclusive control over the server

Best Practices

  • Run a full sync without Fast Sync first to ensure everything is in sync
  • Disable Fast Sync if you need to make manual changes to the server
  • Use Fast Sync for regular automated backups where you control all changes
  • Keep track of when Fast Sync is enabled to avoid confusion
